Common fireplace repairs

  • Damper. The plate that closes the flue. Cast iron dampers rust and stick, especially after a summer of humidity coming down an uncapped chimney. A top-sealing damper, mounted at the top of the flue, also works as a cap.
  • Firebox. In a masonry fireplace the firebrick cracks from heat, and so does the mortar between it. In a factory-built fireplace, the refractory panels crack, and some units must use the maker's replacement panels.
  • Smoke in the room. A closed damper, a blocked flue, wet wood, a house that pulls air down the chimney, or a fireplace opening too big for the flue. Fixes run from a smoke guard across the top of the opening to a taller chimney.
  • Glass doors and screens. Cracked glass, doors that won't seal, missing screens. Glass doors on a factory-built unit need to be the kind the maker lists for it.
  • Hearth extension. The noncombustible floor in front of the fireplace. Cracked tiles or a hearth too short for the opening let embers reach the floor.
  • Outdoor fireplaces. Common in Helotes and Boerne, and on the bigger lots of the north side. They crack and leak like any chimney, without a house around them to show the stain.

Safety first

The US Fire Administration's advice is to have chimneys and vents cleaned and inspected at least once a year, and to keep anything that can burn at least 3 feet from a fireplace. If smoke has been coming into the room, stop using the fireplace until the flue has been checked; smoke you can see means gases you can't, including carbon monoxide. Fireplaces and carbon monoxide.

Gas fireplaces

A gas fireplace that won't light, keeps going out or smells of gas is a different call. Gas lines are different. Texas law defines plumbing to include piping that supplies gas. Running or changing a gas line to a fireplace is work for a plumber licensed by the Texas State Board of Plumbing Examiners. Gas fireplace service.

Questions San Antonio homeowners ask

Why does my fireplace smoke when I light it?

Most often the damper is not fully open, or the flue is cold and full of heavy air on the first fire. Warm the flue with a rolled newspaper held up toward the damper before lighting. If it still smokes, have the flue checked for a blockage.

Can a cracked firebox be repaired?

Usually. Hairline cracks in firebrick are common; wide cracks or loose brick should be repaired with refractory mortar. Cracked panels in a factory-built unit are replaced.

Is it safe to use a fireplace with a broken damper?

A damper stuck open is mostly an energy loss. A damper stuck closed or partly closed sends smoke and carbon monoxide into the room. Don't light it until it opens fully.
