San Antonio fireplace weather: how often it gets cold enough
From 1996-97 to 2024-25, San Antonio International Airport logged a low of 45F or colder on about 76 nights a winter and a freeze on about 14. Every one of the 29 winters had at least one freezing night. The coldest was 9F on February 15, 2021.

Nights at or below freezing each winter, San Antonio
What we found
- The season is short and front-loaded on cold fronts. January averages 21.1 nights at 45F or colder, December 19.4, February 14.5 and November 9.3. October and March see a few each.
- Freezes are routine, hard freezes less so. The median first freeze is December 4 and the median last is February 23. 20 of 29 winters had at least one night of 25F or colder, about 2.1 such nights a winter.
- Winters vary a lot. 2001-02 had 24 freezing nights; 2015-16 had 4. The last ten winters (2015-16 to 2024-25) averaged 10.9 freezing nights and 67.2 nights at 45F or colder, a little milder than the long run.
- February 2021 was the outlier. Between February 10 and 20, 2021, the airport had 9 freezing nights and 5 days when the high never got above 32F, bottoming out at 9F. With the power out, a lot of fireplaces that had not been used in years were lit for days. During Winter Storm Uri in February 2021, carbon monoxide poisoning was one of the two leading circumstances (7.4%) among the indirect storm deaths CDC researchers tracked across nine states.
- Last winter, 2025-26: 49 nights at 45F or colder and 8 freezes, with the first freeze on January 18, 2026; the coldest night was 20F on January 26, 2026. This winter, 2026-27, had 1 night at 45F or colder through October 24, 2026.
- Heating degree days: about 1,345 a winter on a 65F base. That is a mild climate, which is why most San Antonio fireplaces are burned for comfort a few dozen nights a year, not for heat all winter.

Homes by ZIP code
Housing age is a rough guide to what kind of chimney a house has. Most homes built before 1980 that have a fireplace have a masonry chimney; most built since the 1990s have a factory-built fireplace with a metal flue. The Census does not count fireplaces, so this table can only show the housing around them.

The records say how often it gets cold here. Only an inspection says whether your chimney is safe to use. Tell us your ZIP and what kind of fireplace you have, and a local chimney company calls you back.
Ask what the visit costs before they come, and ask for photos of the flue either way.

Weather. NOAA NCEI Global Historical Climatology Network daily file for San Antonio International Airport (station USW00012921), downloaded October 29, 2026 with data through October 24, 2026. Temperatures converted from tenths of a degree Celsius to whole degrees Fahrenheit. A winter runs July 1 to June 30. Averages use the 29 complete winters from 1996-97 to 2024-25; 2025-26 is shown in the charts and table but not in the averages. Heating degree days are 65F minus the day's mean of high and low, summed.

Limits. One airport station stands in for the whole metro. Low-lying spots and the Hill Country side (Boerne and Helotes) often run colder on a clear night; downtown runs warmer. The Census does not ask about fireplaces or chimneys, so nothing here says whether a given house has one or whether it is safe. Only an inspection does that.
